A long-forgotten dinosaur to be Paleoparadoxia as Japan's extinct mammal

Penelitian - A team of scientists identified the old fossil bones believed to originate from dinosaurs as belonging to Paleoparadoxia. A recent report in the Royal Society of Open Science describes the history of bones discovered during the 1950s when workers built a dam near the Tsuchiyu Onsen town in Fukushima.

Archaeologists restore fossils in the record as dinosaur femur and then put on a shelf in the museum. Researchers with this new effort found bone and testing showing fossils originating from about 15.9 million years ago are actually the fossil remains of the Paleoparadoxia femur.

Paleoparadoxia is similar to modern Hippopotamus where previous research has shown that they are herbivores and grow about two meters long. They live in what is now the Pacific Ocean from 20 to 10 million years ago with roaming from Alaska to Japan and southern Mexico.

These ancient creatures have also been considered amphibians, but more recent research has shown they are true marine animals and spend most of the time crawling on the ocean floor while eating.

The researchers returned to the excavation site to further investigate the history and provide materials for mendating fossils. The team tested rocks from an excavation site that contains zircon crystals and measured fossils to create 3-D models of the creature while still alive.
