NASA discovered ancient methane in the atmosphere of Mars

NASA discovered ancient organic matter on Mars. NASA's Curiosity rover has found new evidence stored on rocks that show the planet once supported ancient life, the team reported the new findings to Science as a good omen for future missions in exploring planetary and subsurface surfaces.

Organic molecules in the 3 billion-year-old sedimentary rock near the surface and seasonal variations in methane levels in the atmosphere contain carbon and hydrogen, can also include oxygen, nitrogen and other elements, although organic molecules can also be created by non-biological processes and not always life indicator.

"These new findings, Mars tells us to stay on track and continue to look for evidence of life. I believe our ongoing and planned mission will open up more amazing discoveries on the Red Planet," said Thomas Zurbuchen at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

The surface of Mars is not friendly today, but clear evidence in the past allows the climate of storing liquid water as an essential ingredient for life on the surface. Data from Curiosity revealed billions of years ago where a water lake inside Gale Crater housed all the materials needed for life including chemical building blocks and energy sources.
