Mice learn to avoid future regrets

Penelitian - Mice regrets and learns to avoid it in the future. The post-regret phenomenon is considered unique to humans, but the University of Minnesota scientist team reported the findings to PLOS Biology have found that mice were able to learn to plan for the future to avoid regrets even if there were no additional advantages in rewards.

Mice like humans do not like to change their mind and are willing to pay to avoid such situations. Brian Sweis, a neuroscientist at the University of Minnesota, and colleagues designed an intelligent behavioral experiment in which mice were trained to run on tracks and decided to spend time waiting for food at different "restaurants" where each gave a different wait time.

"Changing your mind means that you first realize that you have made a mistake, and secondly that new action will be a better choice. The two mind-changing decisions capture the peculiarity of regret is agency error and counterfactual reasoning," Sweis said.

Mice had to wait to receive food in every restaurant and then decided to wait or skip and try their luck at the next restaurant. Each mouse has individual preferences about the preferred taste, they are willing to wait for different times for each flavor.

"You enter a Chinese restaurant and have to decide whether to wait for a queue or try your luck at an Italian restaurant next door.This means we define good deals or short delays and bad transactions long delays in every restaurant and we measure the economic strategies used," said David Redish from the University of Minnesota.

The scientists found the economic strategies that mice used changed over the next few months. They rarely change their minds, but when the potential price increases, they learn new strategies to back away from the old strategy that was initially received in haste. Mice learn to prevent themselves into situations that can cause regret.

"Mice are not getting additional food by this new deliberative strategy.The mice are willing to spend time deciding to get through that there must be some hidden costs for the change-of-mind strategy," Sweis said.

"We are learning something new about how the brain may be separately processing information that motivates us to learn and how we decide between what we should and should not do or the things we want," Sweis said.
